How to Choose a Diamond Necklace or Pendant in Singapore

A diamond necklace is worn more often than almost any other piece of fine jewellery. It sits near the face, catches light at conversation distance and stays with the wearer through years of small moments.

That’s why choosing one well matters. The decisions come in a different order than they do for a ring, and the numbers on the spec sheet aren't always the ones the eye notices.

Start With How the Piece Will Be Worn

Most buyers begin by choosing a stone. The better starting point is how the piece will be worn day to day.

  • Daily Wear: A piece for daily wear needs to sit comfortably under collars, layer cleanly with other pieces and hold up to years of use. A diamond pendant necklace or a gold diamond necklace on a fine chain both suit daily wear well.
  • Special Occasions: Statement pieces, bought for a wedding or a milestone event, can afford more presence, since they won't compete with an everyday wardrobe. A necklace with more stones along the chain or one with a heavier platinum setting suits a statement piece.

For a piece meant to bridge both, we'd suggest leaning toward the simpler side and letting the stone carry the presence. Browse our full diamond necklace and pendant collection to see that balance across different settings.

Choose the Chain Length for the Neckline

Chain length changes how the piece sits and what it pairs with.

  • 16 inches: Suits open necklines and shows the pendant higher on the collarbone.
  • 18 inches: The most common length, sitting just below the collarbone and working under most necklines.
  • 20 inches: Gives a longer drop that reads well with crew and scoop necks.
  • 22 to 24 inches: Sits over the bust line, usually paired with statement pendants rather than everyday ones.

Getting the necklace chain length right also matters for layering. A two-inch gap between chains keeps each piece visually distinct. For bridal buyers, it’s worth considering the dress neckline instead of the pendant. The necklace gets built around it, not the other way round.

The Diamond 4Cs Matter Differently for Necklaces

Cut, colour, clarity and carat, the four measures used to judge any diamond, are usually called the diamond 4Cs. They don't carry equal weight on a pendant.

  • Cut still leads. A well-cut diamond returns light and looks alive at conversation distance, exactly where a pendant is seen, and a poorly cut stone can look flat even at a larger size.
  • Colour and clarity carry slightly less weight in a pendant, since the viewing distance is greater than it is on a ring. Grades that show on the finger often disappear at the collarbone.
  • Carat comes down to personal preference. A well-cut half-carat solitaire reads as an elegant everyday piece, while a well-cut carat-and-a-half halo pendant reads as an occasion piece.

Diamond carat sizes are worth weighing against stone type as well. Deciding between a lab-grown or natural stone shapes the budget as much as the carat size does.

The Conversation Worth Having Before You Choose

A necklace is easier to choose in person than online. The way light moves on the stone, the weight of the chain and how the piece sits at the collarbone are things a photograph can’t quite settle. At Lovelotsdiamond, we view by appointment at our Orchard Central office, and most viewings run 30 to 60 minutes, with no pressure to decide on the day.

For buyers comparing what jewellery stores in Singapore have to offer, we'd suggest starting with a private viewing, where you can discuss your preferences with our team. Please text (+65) 83883777 or email enquiries@lovelotsdiamond.com for enquiries.
